Chapter Eleven

Kathleen had to strike Fenton's name from her list—her literal list—of favorite boys from the convent.

She crossed off Wendall's name too, after he followed her sister out of the church for the second day in a row. She assumed he was sweet on “Cinnamon.” Her sister told her everything, including the fact that Wendall's fiancée was supposed to take him away next month. Thus, she had two good reasons to remove his name from her list, even though his darkness intrigued her. Kath saw something of herself in Wendall's devilish smile, and his thirst for violence was a plus in her book.

Benedict was the most recent addition to Kath's list, but she knew very little about him, apart from the fact that he was twenty-four, very shy, and very, very rich. His parents were extremely well-off, and his fiancée was even wealthier. Benedict wasn't the handsomest of the lot, but she liked him enough to include him.

Kath found her first choice, Ellery, in the convent's kitchen. She hovered in the doorway and watched him mix a runny batter that smelled vaguely of fruit.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

His shoulders jumped when he heard her. Ellery was usually alone in the kitchen; he was one of the convent's few residents who actually enjoyed cooking. Raising his spoon, he said, “I'm making muffins for the lads.”

“Sounds nice.” Kath sashayed closer to him, exaggerating the sway of her hips. “But... do you think you could spare a couple of muffins for us girls, too?”

“Of course,” Ellery said. “They're blueberry muffins. The batter's just done, so I'm about to put them in the oven.”

Kathleen stood aside and watched him work. She constantly commented on the batter's delicious scent, which was no lie. Her mouth watered at the prospect of blueberries and sugar—or was it Ellery's pretty face that enticed her more? He was the most beautiful young man in the convent; in fact, he might have been one of the most beautiful young men she had ever seen. It was hard to believe he was a virgin. While she imagined herself tearing off his clothes, Ellery excused himself and slipped from the kitchen. He left her alone, fantasizing in an empty room. Sighing, she licked the batter from his abandoned spoon and followed him out of the kitchen.

A few minutes later, she encountered Rhys in the church's nave. She crashed into the pew beside him and crossed her legs. He had a poppy in his hand, which he slipped into Kathleen's hair.

“Beautiful,” he said. “I'm talking about you, not the flower... but the flower's nice too.”

Kathleen smiled from ear-to-ear. Rhys was her second favorite boy, but he was a bit young, even for her, and she didn't mind younger men. There were ten years between them, but it wasn't as if she wanted him for anything serious or long-term. However, even a dalliance would be difficult while the Grand Mother was watching. She was a few rows behind them, guarding them like a mother hen.
